Leela's Longing....

Restless minutes roll into days,
And days turn into months.
Yet there’s no sight of your sacred face,
No, not even once.

Yesterday I saw your glimpse,
Long after light fell prey to night’s silence.
Or was it just a dream or a wishful trance ?
I’m unsure, a life time, I lived in that glance.

I wonder if you ever would
Whisper my name into the wind
Or murmur a message to a bird !!!
As I do every day, coz unlike you I’m not proud.

Yet it’s all much ado about nothing,
Coz a merchant’s heart can neither smile nor sing.
On the ledger of loss and earning,
There is no place for yearning

Yet the merciless eon,
Moves on without a song or a sign.
Leaving me alone with my pining.
Could it just be meaningless, my eternal longing ?
If yearning ever needed a name, wouldn’t mine befitting ?

Sure enough soon I’m gone.
Orphaned by your eerie frown,
Into the void I walk alone.
Never to be missed or remembered again.
Isn’t it a curse to love a heart of stone ?

Leela is a character from Prem Chand's Novel " THE SHROUD".... this is the English translation of the Hindi novel and this piece is Leela's view point of her own story... this novel will give you some quintessential Indian stories... As a reviewer says Prem Chand is India and I completely agree...
